In many respects, the future of work is already here. In the same time, many people speculate, whether with the 4th industrial revolution there might be a loss of jobs, due to automation and artificial intelligence. Regardless of what’s going to happen, it is clear that the way we work is transforming.
Since we know change is unavoidable, let’s have a look at how work might evolve and how we can prepare for the future.
1. Multiple roles
With the rise of Millennials and Gen Z, positions will be much more fluid than today. Strict organizational charts will likely be replaced by more project-based teams. This is especially appealing to Gen Z. 75% of this generation would be interested in having multiple roles within their company. The so called “gig” economy will continue to expand over the coming years as well. This means that more professionals will work as contractors or freelancers.
2. Decentralized workforces
The “working remotely from home” concept is already common in many organizations. Therefore, it is very likely to further evolve in the future. Besides, the concept will make it easier for the next generation workers to live anywhere in the world.
3. Self education
Technology will continue to evolve. With the progressing digitalization comes the need for employees to learn new skills. Additionally, solely relying on past work experiences will not be enough to stay competitive for certain jobs. Therefore, proactive education and continuous learning will need to be incorporated in the development plan of every business.
4. Work motivation
With newer generations entering the workforce, a pay check alone won’t be enough to make your employees happy. Many are looking for an organization with a clear vision and mission that aligns with their beliefs. Besides, incentives such as personal development, coaching and access to the newest tech gadgets to work remotely, will gain an increasing importance.
5. AI vs human relations
Artificial intelligence & intelligent machines will be the new co-workers to humans. Consequently, employees will need to learn to collaborate with those on a daily basis. To ensure a smooth transition and work efficiency, this will require special awareness trainings. Besides, the creation of dedicated departments for AI focussed, machine learning & digital teams should be part of every company’s transformation plan.
